We have a rock and roll theme going at work this year. A female co-worker really wants me to be Tom Petty. I told her I would do it if others in my work area are participating. I have a thing about being the only one in a costume.

They're not in any position of authority
Wrong. They have the authority to decide who gets what "privileges" in the congregation. And they have the authority to strip people of those privileges. And they have the authority to expel people from the congregation if they arbitrarily decide that they aren't repentant enough for their sins.
You're either a liar, trying to deceive less knowledgable people who may be lurking, or you simply have no idea what you're talking about

New Homo erectus Skull Shakes up Palaeontology
by cofty ina fantastic homo erectus skull has been found in georgia - no not our former colony, the one in asia.. it is one of 5 that have been found at a site in dmanisi, it's the first homo erectus to be found outside of africa and it is in excellent condition.
the fossils are dated at 1.8 million years ago and comparisions of the specimens have thrown doubt over the details of human evolution.. it is possible that species previously named as h rudolfensis , h gautengensis , h ergaster and possibly h habilis were actually all h erectus.
the natural variation withing the species may be greater than thought previously.. the "lumpers" and the "splitters" are going to have plenty to argue about for years to come.. note to creationists - please read the article carefully.

I was just reading an article in the local paper about this discovery, on my break about an hour ago. Very fascinating.

What Was Your First Experience In Exposing Yourself To "Apostasy"?
by minimus inas a young teenager, i would look at "apostate" books at the city library.
i was always intrigued as to what was sooo bad and other than a few writings of some that seemed like they hated the witnesses, i would clandestinely look at literature, especially in "christian" bookstores.. it took years for me to finally disconnect.
i will say that ray franz' books enlightened me the most!.

My first was after I had stopped attending altogether. I stumbled upon a book called 'The Watchtower Files' by Duane Mangini by accident in a used bookstore.

Since most JW's HATE giving talks and doing meeting parts, why does the Watchtower Society still require it?
by yadda yadda 2 ini loathed giving talks and doing meeting parts.
i dreaded all assignments.
i was intelligent enough and always did a good job, but all my jw life (born in to mid-30's) i enjoyed giving talks about as much as a visit to the dentist.. i am sure that 90% of all jw's similarly dislike it.

It isn't just a matter of liking to give them. Some people simply don't have the aptitude to do it, but are expected to anyway. Not everyone is cut out for public speaking. It was always painful to watch certain people stumble through whatever part they had in a misguided effort to prove their zeal to others.

Latest WT lesson typical example of why meetings are such downers
by JimmyPage inhere's what i gathered from the most recent wt study: 1. all your problems are your own fault, or 2. the ones that aren't your fault are satan's fault.
3. don't blame jehovah for anything, and 4. more importantly, never criticize the ones who claim to represent jehovah.. this is a typical meeting nowadays.
there are all kinds of possibilities to emphasize positive qualities and experiences.

1. All your problems are your own fault
Yes, it's a JW's own fault if he/she lacks the social skills and resources necessary to deal with real-world problems. It's not like they're discouraged from obtaining these things at every turn.

Stand For Pure Worship, what convinces you that the governing body is being used by Jehovah? Thanks.
by The Quiet One ini struggled with this question before i got baptised.

Well, I usually do study on my own. Occassionally we might invite someone over for Family Worship Night, but for the most part I study privately. Whether that be with the Insight Books, or using the CD Rom, See the Great Land, etc., you get it.
Wow, talk about obtuse.

Not Forsaking Christian Gatherings
by StephaneLaliberte inat the meeting this week, there was a part about placing our trust in jehovah and not worrying about food and shelter (mat 6:33).
the part was based on the 2013 yearbook p138 and 139 where there were two examples:.
a family went to their convention leaving their chickens unattended for a number of days, worried about if they would survive.

After the meeting, turns out that some wind scared the fishes toward their fishing area and they caught fishes using a basket!
And that's how Bubba Gump shrimp came to be.

What will the world be like in 2100?
by slimboyfat invery interesting video from futurist james burke.

he believes scarcity will be a thing of the past because of nanofabricators (sounds like a replicator for star trek fans).

Humans will all have gills, like Kevin Costner in "Waterworld".
